On Saturday night, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles will try to quickly get over their opening week blowout loss when they go up against the Alcorn State Braves from the FCS.
Southern Miss had a tough opponent on their hands in Mississippi State and it showed as they ended up losing 49-0 on the road. The Golden Eagles gained just 283 total yards in the loss, while their defense gave up a whopping 550 yards. They also turned the ball over three times and were just 4-for-18 on third down attempts.
Southern Miss quarterback Nick Mullens had a tough game, completing just 20 of his 42 passes for 212 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Starting running back only gained 43 yards on his 13 carries in the game.
Last Saturday, Alcorn State was able to open its season up with a 55-7 blowout win over Lynchburg. They gained 559 yards on offensive in the win, while their defense was able to hold Lynchburg to just 141 yards, including an unbelievable negative-82 yards on the ground.
The Braves were led by running back Darryan Ragsdale, who rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. Quarterback John Gibbs Jr. was 7-for-12 through the air for 148 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Wide receiver Charles Hughes had three catches for 94 yards an a touchdown.
