Hamilton started their season off right by winning at home on Thursday night against Saskatchewan by a score of 23-17. Jeremiah Masoli finished with 169 yards on 17 for 28 passing to pace the Tiger-Cats. Brandon Banks was Masoli's main target on the day, finishing the night with 6 catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. Frankie Williams had the biggest play of the night for Hamilton, returning a punt 68 yards for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. It was a pretty good offensive game considering the Roughriders defense is one of the toughest in the league.
On defense the Tiger-Cats we led by Ja'Gared Davis, who finished with 7 tackles. Lirim Hajrullahu made 3 for 3 on field goal attempts including a 48 yarder. Williams finished the night with 7 punt returns for 103 yards and 3 kickoff returns for 56 yards to lead the special teams unit.

Toronto started the season on a bye week coming off a disastrous 2018 season. The Argonauts finished last season only 4-14, finishing with their worst record since 2009. Coming off a Grey Cup win the season before, Toronto became the first team since 2006 to follow a Grey Cup win with a losing season. The problems were on both offense and defense in 2018. They allowed a league-high 560 points and scored the 2nd fewest points in the league (369 points).
Marc Trestman was fired following the season and replaced with Corey Chamblin. Chamblin is a defensive minded coach who won CFL Coach of the Year in 2013 after leading Saskatchewan to the Grey Cup. Expect the defense to show strides sooner this season than the offense, who returns 2 quarterbacks that both had pretty bad seasons in relief of the injured Ricky Ray. James Franklin and McLeod Bethel-Thompson will battle for the starting duties all season unless someone snags it. Chamblin has said that the job is Franklin's to lose, but we'll see how long that lasts if he struggles early. One positive for the QB's will be new receiver Derel Walker, who they signed from Edmonton. Walker finished the 2018 campaign with 52 catches for 875 yards and 8 TD's. He'll be looked upon to open up an offense that was really bad last year.
This game is tough to pick because we haven't seen Toronto play with their new coach and system. Hamilton seems like the safer bet at this point until we can see the Argonauts on the field.
