Monday night, the Washington Nationals will take the field behind Stephen Strasburg (11 -11, 3.46 ERA) as they square off against the Atlanta Braves and Ervin Santana (14 – 8, 3.76 ERA).  Strasburg makes his 32nd start as Santana makes his 29th. 

Stephen Strasburg took the defeat his last time out despite a relatively decent start.  Strasburg went 6 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits (including a home run).  He fanned 8 without issuing a single free pass.  It was Strasburg’s first loss in over a month but he is just 4 -4 in his last 10 outings. In 2013, Strasburg finished the year with an 8 – 9 record and a 3.00 ERA in 30 starts.

Last season, Strasburg was 0 – 1 with a 2.86 ERA in 5 starts against the Braves.  This season, he is 0 – 3 in 4 starts against Atlanta including his last start. 

Ervin Santana was roughed up in his last outing and it led to a loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 8 hits through 5 innings while walking 4 and striking out 5.  Despite that bad start, Santana has been money in the bank for the Braves in recent weeks and owns a 6 -2 record in his last 10 outings.   In 2013, he posted a record of 9 – 10 with a 3.24 ERA in 32 starts for the Kansas City Royals. 

Last season, Santana missed getting the decision in his only start against the Nationals.  He just took the loss against Washington and is 1 -2 in 3 starts against them this season.
