Wednesday afternoon, the Washington Nationals and Doug Fister will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks and Brandon McCarthy. Fister makes just his 2nd start of the season as McCarthy makes his 9th.

Doug Fister’s first start of the season was a rough outing where he was lit up for 7 runs on 9 hits (including 3 homers) in just 4.1 innings of work.   He struck out 2 without issuing a walk.   The start gave him a 0 – 1 record and an ERA of 10.38 to open the season.  Last season, Fister was 14 – 9 with a 3.67 ERA in 32 starts for the Detroit Tigers.

Brandon McCarthy took his 6th loss of the season in his last start as his record fell to 1 – 6 with an ERA of 5.66.  McCarthy’s ERA is definitely inflated thanks his last outing where he surrendered 7 runs on 9 hits in 3.1 innings.  It was the shortest day of work that McCarthy has had this season.  Unless he turns it around immediately, he won’t better last year’s results when he went 5 – 11 with a 4.53 ERA in 22 starts.

In 2013, McCarthy lost his only start against the Nationals after allowing 2 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings of work.   Washington’s Denard Span is batting .333 against McCarthy with a double and a triple.
