Friday night, the Toronto Blue Jays will send Drew Hutchison to the mound to face the Cleveland Indians and Justin Masterson.  Hutchison and Masterson will each be making their 4th start of the season.

Justin Masterson has pitched to three no decisions in his first three starts of the season.  After a solid Opening Day start, he has been brutal in the last two.  Masterson’s previous start lasted just 4.2 innings where he gave up 6 runs on 7 hits (including a home run) with 5 walks and 7 strikeouts.   The numbers are not looking good compared to last season’s results, when he went 14 – 10 with a 3.45 ERA in 29 starts and 3 relief appearances.

In 2013, Masterson was 1 – 0 with a 2.13 ERA in 2 starts against the Blue Jays.   In his career, Toronto’s Jose Bautista has done well against Masterson.   Bautista is batting .353 with 2 homers and 5 RBIs when facing Masterson.

Drew Hutchison pitched to a no decision in his last start despite a quality outing from him. He went 6 innings and surrendered just 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. Toronto ended up losing the game anyway but it was the second shutout start for Hutchison this season. Hutchison’s 2nd start was the worst for him and that’s why his ERA is high at 3.68. But nonetheless, Hutchison is doing well on his comeback from Tommy John surgery.

Since he didn’t pitch at all last season, Hutchison will have to rely on his 2012 experiences against the hitters in the Cleveland lineup. Just 5 Indians have faced Hutchison, with almost all of them hitting well off of him.
