It's taken Texas pitcher Colby Lewis (1-1) a couple starts to get used to life back in the big leagues after making his first trip to the big league mound since 2012. He'll look for a second straight win against a man who has dominated for the last 10 years in Seattle's Felix Hernandez. Lewis went 5 1/3 innings and gave up 4 runs in his first game back from hip and leg rehab on April 14th against these Mariners. He followed that outing by giving up a lone run to the White Sox for his first win since June 17th of 2012.
In the previous matchup, the Mariners used a 6 run 6th inning to chase Lewis and head on to a 7-1 win. Prior to that Lewis was pitching well with a Mike Zunino HR in the 3rd inning the only blemish. The current Mariners roster has 77 career plate appearances against Lewis, scoring an even 22 hits and 22 K's amongst the bunch for a .286 combined average.
Miami's Jose is aiming to be the new Hernandez on the block but the 28-year-old King Felix has shown this season that he's not exactly washed up. Felix Hernandez did get touched a little bit his last time out against the lowly Astros, giving up a season high in hits (7) and runs (6). The loss “pushed” his ERA to 2.04 as he'd allowed only 6 runs in 28.1 innings prior. King Felix also has 43 K's on the year in only 35.1 IP, 3rd in the majors.
Hernandez met up with Texas once this year, getting a no-decision on April 16th despite tossing 7 innings of 1-run ball and striking out 9. For whatever reason Hernandez can't get W's against the Rangers, going 0-4 in 2013 with a 7.57 ERA and posting a 12-20 lifetime record.
