Wednesday afternoon, the Texas Rangers will take the field behind Nick Martinez (2 – 9, 5.27 ERA) as they square off against the Miami Marlins and Nathan Eovaldi (6 – 7, 3.96 ERA).  It will be the 17th start and 22nd appearance for Martinez and the 26th start for Eovaldi. 

Nick Martinez tasted defeat once again in his last outing.   In the loss, Martinez allowed 4 runs and 6 hits (including a home run) in 6 innings of work.  He walked a batter and struck out 6.  Losing has become very common for Martinez and a look at his recent record tells the story.  He is just 1 – 7 in his last 10 outings.  Many rookies have a hard time adjusting to Major League hitters but Martinez seems to be having a rough go of it.

Martinez has never faced the Marlins before and a good scouting report might not be enough to get him through this start.

Nathan Eovaldi saw his record drop below .500 as he took the loss his last time out.  In that start, Eovaldi gave up 4 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings as he walked a batter and struck out 4.  Eovaldi has given up 3 or more runs six times in his last 10 starts en route to a 2 – 4 record in that span of time.  Last season, Eovaldi posted a record of 4 – 6 with a 3.39 ERA in 18 starts.

In 2013, Eovaldi didn’t pitch against the Rangers and he has only seen 3 of the Texas hitters before.  Mike Carp is 0 for 1 against Eovaldi, Prince Fielder is 1 for 5 and Kevin Kouzmanoff is 1 for 2 with 3 RBIs.
