Tuesday night, the Texas Rangers will send Nick Martinez to the mound as they face the Baltimore Orioles and T.J. McFarland.  It will be the 11th start and 16th appearance for Martinez as McFarland makes his 1st start and 15th appearance.

Nick Martinez took another loss in his last outing and that dropped his record to 1 – 5 with a 4.65 ERA.  In the loss, Martinez was touched up for 4 runs and 6 hits in just 2.1 innings.  He didn’t strike out a single batter as he walked 5. In a tough season for the rookie right-hander, the outing was one of his worst.  He has the tools for success as evidenced by his numbers in the Minors this season as he was 0 – 0 with a 1.86 ERA in 2 starts. Martinez just has to settle down and give the Rangers some quality starts.

Martinez faced the Orioles in early June and he took the loss after giving up 6 runs on 9 hits (including 2 homers) in 5.1 innings of work. He walked 3 while striking out just 1.

T.J. McFarland is expected to get the start for the Orioles in place of the injured Bud Norris.  McFarland brings a 0 -1 record with a 2.70 ERA into his just his 2nd Major League start.  He opened the season at Triple-A Norfolk, where he was 0 -1 with a 3.75 ERA in 5 starts.  In the Majors, McFarland has been working out of the bullpen but if Norris is out long, he might get a few starts in.  In 2013, McFarland was 4 - 1 with a 4.22 ERA in a start and 37 relief appearances.

McFarland has seen some action in relief against the Rangers this season. He pitched 2.2 innings in back to back games early in June as he allowed just 3 hits.
