Wednesday afternoon, the Tampa Bay Rays will give the ball to Jake Odorizzi as they square off against the Seattle Mariners and Brandon Maurer.  Odorizzi will be making his 8th start as Maurer makes his 5th.

 Jake Odorizzi comes into this one after 2 straight no decisions that have left his record at 1 – 3 as his ERA dropped to 5.79.  In his last outing, Odorizzi pitched 5 shutout innings and gave up just 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 11 batters.  But Odorizzi’s day was cut short due to the 101 pitches he had thrown in the outing.  Last season, Odorizzi went 0 – 1 with a save and a 3.94 ERA in 4 starts and 3 relief appearances. 

In 2013, Odorizzi didn’t face the Mariners and he has only faced one batter in the Seattle lineup. Robinson Cano is 1 for 1 with a double against Odorizzi.

Brandon Maurer saw his record fall to 1-1 and his ERA dip slightly to 6.20 after losing his last start.  In that outing, Maurer gave up 6 runs on 14 hits in 7.1 innings without a walk or a strikeout.  In 2013, Maurer went 5 – 8 with an ERA of 6.30 in 14 starts and 8 relief appearances during his rookie season.

Last season, Maurer appeared in just one game against the Rays and pitched 2.2 innings of relief.  He allowed a run on 2 hits in that outing.  Overall, Maurer has only faced 7 Tampa Bay hitters and has only allowed 2 hits and an RBI in 7 at-bats.
