On Tuesday night, Drew Smyly (6-9) will be making his first start for the Tampa Bay Rays when he takes on right-hander Jason Hammel (0-4) and the Oakland Athletics.

In his last start for the Detroit Tigers, Drew Smyly pitched five innings against the Chicago White Sox and ended up with a no decision. He allowed four runs on 11 hits in that game while striking out two batters and walking no one. In 21 starts, he has a 3.93 ERA this season and he has struck out 89 batters in 105.1 innings.

Jason Hammel lost for the fourth game in a row last Wednesday when he was defeated by the Houston Astros on the road. In that game, he allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings while walking three and striking out four. In four starts since being traded to the A's, Hammel is 0-4 with a 9.53 ERA and he has given up 26 hits in 17 innings.

One player on the Rays who has done very well against Hammel in his career is James Loney, who is 12-for-38 against him with three doubles, three home runs and nine RBI.
