Veteran Erik Bedard will be on the mound for the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night and he will be going up against reigning AL Cy Young winner Max Scherzer Detroit Tigers.

Erik Bedard pretty pitched well in his start against the Baltimore Orioles on the road on Monday and came away with his fourth win of the year for his efforts. He allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings of work that day while walking no one and striking out seven. Bedard is now 4-5 on the year with a 4.21 ERA and he has struck out 64 batters in 72.2 innings.

Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter has nine hits in 28 at-bats against Bedard in his career with two doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Austin Jackson is hitless against him in eight at-bats with four strikeouts.

Max Scherzer did well enough to beat the Houston Astros on Monday, but he has to settle for the no decision in a game the Tigers ended up winning 4-3. He went seven innings in that start and allowed just two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out a season-high 13 batters. Through 17 starts, Scherzer is 9-3 and he has struck out 10.7 batters per nine innings.

Rays veteran James Loney has five hits in 20 at-bats against Scherzer with a double, a home run and five RBI.
