If St. Louis wants to keep up in the NL Central with the red-hot Brewers they'll need another solid outing from Shelby Miller (1-2), especially if Washington's Stephen Strasburg (1-2) can get on track. Miller has been plagued by a penchant to give up the long ball thus far in 2014, giving up 5 through just 17.1 IP. After allowing 8 runs in 11.1 innings to start the year, Miller buckled down in his last start against Milwaukee, pitching 6 innings of 3 hit ball while fanning 7.
The 23-year-old Miller has made just 2 starts in his career against Washington, dominating them twice last year to post a 2-0 record and a 0.71 ERA. Almost a year ago to the day Miller pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings against the Nationals to earn his 3rd win of 2013. The teams met again on Miller's last start of the regular season in which he scattered 4 hits and 1 run over 6 innings for another win. Not one player on the Washington roster has multiple hits against Miller in 33 combined AB's.
Strasburg has been the proverbial riddle, wrapped up in a mystery, inside an enigma so far this season. It's common knowledge he has some of the best stuff in baseball as evident by two games of four this year with 10+ strikeouts. Then there's games like his last outing in which the Marlins knocked the right-hander out in the 4th inning by scoring 6 runs to boost his season ERA to 6.00.
Surprisingly Strasburg has only made 2 career starts against the Cardinals, including one last year where he gave up just 5 hits and 3 runs over 7 innings but scored the loss nonetheless. Collectively the current St. Louis roster has hit .244 against the pitcher led by Matt Holliday (4-6, 2B) and Matt Carpenter (2-3, 2 2B).
