Sunday afternoon, the St. Louis Cardinals will give the ball to Jaime Garcia as they take on the Toronto Blue Jays and Drew Hutchison.  Garcia will be making his 5th start as Hutchison makes his 13th. 

Jaime Garcia pitched to his 2nd straight no-decision in his last start and that kept his record at 1 – 0 with a 5.47 ERA.  In that outing, Garcia gave up 6 runs on 8 hits (including a homer) in 5 innings.  He didn’t issue any walks as he struck out 3.  The rough day saw Garcia’s ERA increase by over a run.  Last season, Garcia had an ERA of 3.58 as he compiled a 5 – 2 record in 9 starts.

In 2013, Garcia didn’t face the Blue Jays and in his career, he has opposed only 7 on the Toronto roster.  Garcia has held the 7 batters to a combined .206 average with 7 hits, a homer and 4 RBIs in 34 at-bats.

Drew Hutchison saw his record hold at 4 – 3 with a 3.50 ERA after pitching to a no-decision in his last outing.  In that start, Hutchison pitched 7 innings of shutout ball and allowed just 3 hits without a walk while striking out 7.  It was one of Hutchison’s better efforts but he wasn’t rewarded for it.  Hutchison is pitching well in his first full season since 2012 after missing all of 2013 due to Tommy John surgery.

In his short career, Hutchison has never faced the Cardinals.  With some assistance from the rest of the pitching staff and a good scouting report, Hutchison should learn enough to formulate a battle plan against St. Louis.
