On Thursday afternoon, young right-hander Carlos Martinez will make his fourth start for the St. Louis Cardinals when he faces Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants.

On Sunday, Carlos Martinez was pulled after 4.1 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road and ended up with a no decision. He allowed just one run in those 4.1 innings of work while walking three and striking out four. In 48 innings this season, Martinez has 40 strikeouts and he has only given up two home runs to opposing hitters.

Giants veteran Gregor Blanco has a hit in both of his plate appearances against Martinez with a triple and an RBI. Brandon Hicks is 0-for-2 against him in his career with two strikeouts.

Big left-hander Madison Bumgarner picked up his fifth loss of the season on Sunday when he was defeated by the Cincinnati Reds at home. He pitched six innings in that start and allowed a season-high five earned runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out three. Bumgarner has a 9-5 record through 17 starts and he has struck out 114 batters in 108.2 innings.

Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay has four hits in his nine at-bats against Bumgarner with two doubles, three strikeouts and an RBI. Surprisingly, none of the Cardinals have been able to hit a home run off of the lefty yet.
