On Thursday, Shelby Miller (7-8) will be hoping to win his first game since June 7 when the St. Louis Cardinals go up against San Diego Padres rookie Odrisamer Despaigne (2-2).

Last Saturday, Shelby Miller pitched 5.2 innings against the Chicago Cubs on the road and ended up with a no decision. He allowed two earned runs on three base hits in that outing and struck out three batters while walking no one. Miller currently has a 4.20 ERA for the Cards and he has only been able to strike out 5.9 batters per nine innings.

Padres veteran Chris Denorfia has three hits in his four at-bats against Miller with a double and no strikeouts. First baseman Yonder Alonso is 1-for-5 against him with an RBI and a strikeout.

Odrisamer Despaigne made his sixth start of the season last week against the Atlanta Braves and ended up suffering his second loss. He could only make it through 3.2 innings in that start and allowed five runs (two earned) while walking a season-high five batters and striking out three. Despite that rough start, Despaigne still has a very solid 1.66 ERA and he's only given up one home run so far.

The Cardinals will be facing Despaigne for the first time on Thursday. They can expect to see a 91-92 mph fastball from the right-hander along with a curveball and a changeup.
