Friday night, the St. Louis Cardinals will send Shelby Miller (8 – 9, 4.25 ERA) to the hill as they face the Philadelphia Phillies and Kyle Kendrick (5 - 11, 4.90 ERA).  Miller makes his 25th start and 26th appearance as Kendrick makes his 26th start.

Shelby Miller pitched to a no-decision in his last outing but it could have easily been a loss considering his efforts. In 6 innings of work, Miller surrendered 4 runs and 4 this while walking 6 and striking out 5. Miller seems to fluctuate between allowing 1 or 2 runs and allowing 5 or 6 runs.  In his last 10 outings, he is a dismal 1 – 3.  Last season, Miller was a solid 15 – 9 with a 3.06 ERA in 31 starts.

In 2013, Miller won his only start against the Phillies after holding them scoreless over 6 innings.  Earlier this season, he took the loss against Philadelphia after surrendering 4 runs and 7 hits (including a homer) in 6.2 innings.

Kyle Kendrick pitched to his 3rd straight no-decision in his last outing.  In that start, Kendrick gave up 4 runs and 5 hits (including a home run) in 5 innings.  He walked 2 batters but struck out just 1.  Kendrick’s last win was in late July and he is just 2 - 4 in his last 10 starts.  Last season, Kendrick posted his 2nd straight sub-.500 season by going 10 – 13 with a 4.70 ERA in 30 starts.

In 2013, Kendrick was 0 – 1 with a 3.75 ERA in 2 starts against the Cardinals.  Earlier this season, Kendrick lost to St. Louis after allowing 5 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings.
