22-year-old Carlos Martinez will be making his third start of the season for the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night when they face Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Over the weekend, Carlos Martinez won for the first time this season by beating the Philadelphia Phillies at home. He pitched five decent innings in that game and allowed three runs on just three hits while walking one and striking out five. In 43.2 innings both as a starter and as a bullpen arm, Martinez has struck out 36 batters and has only given up two home runs.

Veteran A.J. Ellis has gone up against Martinez four times and has a home run, a walk and three RBI. Outfielder Yasiel Puig is 2-for-3 against him with no strikeouts.

Hyun-Jin Ryu was able to pick up his second win in a row and his ninth win overall on Sunday by defeating the San Diego Padres on the road. He pitched six strong innings in that game and allowed just one run on four hits and struck out two while walking just one. Ryu is now 9-3 this year and has a very good 3.06 ERA.

Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday has two singles in three at-bats against Ryu with no strikeouts. None of the current Cardinals have been able to hit a home run off of the left-hander yet.
