Sunday afternoon, Shelby Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals will square off against Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Miller makes his 17th start as Kershaw makes his 12th.

Shelby Miller didn’t get the decision in his last outing and that held his record at 7 – 6 with a 3.75 ERA.  Miller’s night was cut short after he had back spasms and had to be taken out of the game.  Those back spasms could have been the reason that he allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in just 2.2 innings while walking 5 and striking out just 2. But his back appears to be well enough for him to go against the Dodgers. And he still has time to equal last year’s record of 15 – 9 with a 3.06 ERA in 31 starts.

In 2013, Miller didn’t get a decision in either of his 2 starts against the Dodgers.  And he will have to look out for Adrian Gonzalez.  Gonzalez is 2 for 4 against Miller with a homer and 3 RBIs.    

Clayton Kershaw comes into this game with an 8 – 2 record and an ERA of 2.24 after winning his 5th straight the last time out.  In the win, Kershaw hurled 8 scoreless innings and surrendered 6 hits and a walk as he fanned 8 batters.   Kershaw is backing up last year’s Cy Young winning season with possibly another one this year.  In 2013, he was 16 – 9 with a 1.83 ERA in 33 starts.

Last season, Kershaw was 0 - 2 with a 4.15 ERA in 2 starts against the Cardinals. He would be wise to pitch around Pete Kozma as Kozma is 4 for 5 with 3 doubles and 3 RBIs against Kershaw.
