Right-hander Adam Wainwright will be going for his ninth win of the season on Wednesday when he and the St. Louis Cardinals face off against Jason Vargas and the Kansas City Royals.

Adam Wainwright took his first loss in nearly a month's time last Friday when he was beaten by the San Francisco Giants. It was by far his worst outing of the season as he gave up seven earned runs and walked one in just 4.1 innings of work. He still has excellent numbers on the year, though, with his 8-3 record and his 2.32 ERA.

Alcides Escobar has faced Wainwright 25 times in his career and has a .261 batting average with an RBI and a strikeout. In 104 combined at-bats against Wainwright, the current Royals have a .327 batting average, but none of them have hit a home run off of him.

Jason Vargas picked up his fifth win of the year when he went six innings against the Toronto Blue Jays and allowed just one run. He gave up seven hits in that game and walked three while striking out seven. Vargas' strikeout numbers are up this season and he has only walked 29 batters in 77 innings.

Cardinals outfielder Peter Bourjos has just two hits against Vargas in 16 at-bats while striking out seven times. Matt Holliday is 4-for-8 against him with two doubles and three RBI.
