Wednesday afternoon, the St. Louis Cardinals will give the ball to Marco Gonzales as they face the Colorado Rockies and Christian Bergman. Gonzales will be making his Major League debut as Bergman makes his 4th start of the season.
Marco Gonzales will get the start after getting the call up from the Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate in Springfield. At Springfield, Gonzales was 3- 2 with a 2.33 ERA in 7 starts. He began the season with the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Class-A Florida State league where he went 2 – 2 with a 1.43 ERA in 6 starts before getting promoted to Springfield in May.
Gonzales is regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in the Cardinals organization and many will be looking to see if his meteoric rise to the Majors is justified.
Christian Bergman saw his record fall to 0 – 2 and his ERA rise sharply to 7.20 after taking the loss his last time out. In that outing, Bergman was lit up for 7 runs and 9 hits (including 3 home runs) in just 3 innings of work. He didn’t issue a walk while striking out 3. It was the 2nd straight start that Bergman allowed 2 or more homers. That isn’t surprising considering the fact that Bergman allowed 9 homers in just 12 starts at Triple-A Colorado Springs before getting the call to the Majors.
Bergman is still getting adjusted to the Majors and hasn’t faced the Cardinals before. If he is going to avoid another loss, he will need to settle down and take any assistance that the rest of the pitching staff and the scouting report can offer.
