The St. Louis Cardinals will send Michael Wacha to the mound on Wednesday to face Tony Cingrani and the Cincinnati Reds in a game that features two playoff teams out of the NL Central. Wacha made nine starts and six relief appearances for the Cardinals in 2013 and was successful in both roles. He finished the year with a fantastic 2.78 ERA and struck out over nine batters per nine innings. He will be looking to replicate that success in his first season as a full-time starter.
None of the Reds have had many appearances against Wacha, but Joey Votto has had a bit of success against him with a single, a double and a walk in five career plate appearances. Zack Cozart has had two hits in three at-bats against him. Outfielder Jay Bruce hasn't been able to figure Wacha out yet, striking out 3 times in five at-bats.
Tony Cingrani made his first 18 starts in the Major Leagues for the Reds last season and turned into one of the better young starters in the game. He doesn't have the fastest fastball, but he still fools hitters with his movement. He finished the season with a 2.92 ERA and 10.32 strikeouts per nine innings.
Cingrani has faced the Cardinals a couple of times in his career and has done pretty well against them. Allen Craig has faced Cingrani three times and struck out twice. Matt Holliday has had the most success against him by getting on base in five of his six plate appearances, including getting one double.
