Sunday night, Lance Lynn will get the call for the St. Louis Cardinals as they take on Jason Hammel and the Chicago Cubs.  Lynn will be making his 7th trip to the hill as Hammel makes his 6th.

Lance Lynn has slowed down from the torrid pace that he was setting early in the season.  Lynn won his first 4 starts then lost his 5th and then pitched to a no decision in his last start.  In that outing, Lynn went 5 innings and surrendered 3 runs (all earned) on 5 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.  Lynn’s record stands at 4 – 1 with an ERA of 3.60.  Last season, Lynn went 15 – 10 with an ERA of 3.97 in 33 starts. 

In 2013, Lynn was 2 – 3 with a 3.60 ERA in 5 starts against the Chicago Cubs.  In 30 innings of work, Lynn had 30 strikeouts to just 9 walks.    Chicago’s Starlin Castro could pose a problem for Lynn.  Castro is 10 of 27 with 3 doubles, a triple and 3 RBIs when facing the big right-hander.

Jason Hammel improved his record to 4 – 1 and his ERA to 2.08 after getting the win in his last outing.  In the start, Hammel pitched 7 shutout innings and allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7.  Last season with the Baltimore Orioles, Hammel was 7 – 8 with a save and an ERA of 4.97 in 23 starts and 3 relief appearances. 

In 2013, Hammel didn’t get to face the Cardinals but he has seen 6 of the St. Louis hitters in the past.  Hammel will need to pitch carefully to Jhonny Peralta.  Peralta is batting .467 with 2 homers and 8 RBIs when facing Hammel.
