Saturday afternoon, the St. Louis Cardinals will send John Lackey (1-0) to the hill to face the Baltimore Orioles and Ubaldo Jimenez (3 – 8).  Lackey makes his 23rd start as Jimenez makes his 19th.

John Lackey posted a win in his first start for the St. Louis Cardinals after coming over from the Boston Red Sox.  In the victory, Lackey gave up 2 runs and 7 hits (including a home run) in 7 innings of work.  He didn’t issue any walks while striking out 4.   The victory wasn’t much of a surprise for a pitcher that had gone 5 – 3 in his last 9 starts.  Last season, Lackey was 10 – 13 with a 3.52 ERA in 29 starts for the Red Sox.

In 2013, Lackey was 2 -1 with a 3.34 ERA in 4 starts against the Orioles.  This season, Lackey is 1 – 2 against the orioles in 3 starts.

Ubaldo Jimenez will come off the disabled list to make this start after a right ankle sprain sidelined him in mid-July.   He looked god in his last rehab start and that allowed him to rejoin the big league club.  In his last outing, Jimenez escaped with a no-decision after lasting just 3.2 innings.  He gave up 4 runs and 5 hits (including a homer) while walking 6 and striking out just 4.   Jimenez is 1 - 4 in his last 10 starts. He went 13 – 9 with a 3.30 ERA in 32 starts last season for the Cleveland Indians.

In 2013, Jimenez didn’t face the Cardinals but he has seen many of the St. Louis hitters before.  St. Louis is batting .255 against Jimenez with 25 hits, 2 homers and 10 RBIs in 98 at-bats.
