Friday night, the St. Louis Cardinals will take the field behind Justin Masterson (1-0, 7.50 ERA) as they take on the Baltimore Orioles and Chris Tillman (8 – 5, 3.78 ERA).  Masterson makes his 21st start as Tillman makes his 25th. 

Justin Masterson picked up his first win for his new team in his last outing. In his 1st start for the Cardinals since coming over from the Cleveland Indians, Masterson allowed 5 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings of work.  He struck out 4 while walking 3.  The new locale might have been a good thing for Masterson because he hadn’t had a victory since early June and was 2 – 3 in his last 9 starts for Cleveland.  In 2013, Masterson went 14 -10 with a 3.45 ERA in 29 starts and 3 relief appearances for the Tribe.

Last season, Masterson was 0 – 2 with an 8.59 ERA in 2 starts against the Orioles.   This season, he escaped with a no-decision against Baltimore after allowing 5 runs and 8 hits (including a homer) in 5.2 innings.

Chris Tillman got the victory in his last outing after a brilliant performance from the righty.  In that win, Tillman threw 7 innings of scoreless ball and held the opposition to just 4 hits while striking out 6.  Tillman has pitched well in recent outings although his record (1 – 1 in his last 5 starts) doesn’t reflect it.  Last season, Tillman was 16 – 7 with a 3.71 ERA in 33 starts.

In 2013, Tillman didn’t face the Cardinals and he has only seen 3 of their hitters before.  A.J. Pierzynski is batting .278 against Tillman a double and 2 RBIs.
