Monday night, the Seattle Mariners will take the field behind James Paxton (6 – 3, 2.06 ERA) as they face the Toronto Blue Jays and J.A. Happ (9 -11, 4.35 ERA). Paxton will make his 12th start as Happ makes his 25th start and 29th appearance.
James Paxton took the loss in his last start after a fairly decent effort. Paxton surrendered 3 runs on 4 hits in 6.2 innings of work. He walked a batter and struck out 8. Paxton has been up and down in recent starts and is 4 -3 in his 9 starts since coming back from a strained lat muscle that cost him most of the season. He started just 4 games in 2013 en route to a 3 -0 record and a 1.50 ERA.
Paxton has never faced the Blue Jays but with the help of a good scouting report and the rest of the pitching staff, he should be able to find a way past Toronto.
J.A. Happ dropped his 3rd straight game in his last start. Happ was knocked around for 5 runs and 8 hits (including 2 homers) in 6 innings of work. He struck out 5 without issuing any walks. Happ has had a hard time getting victories in recent weeks and is just 1 - 6 in his last 10 outings. Happ made 18 starts in 2013 as he finished the year with a 5 – 7 record and a 4.56 ERA.
Last season, Happ escaped with a no-decision in his only start against the Mariners after allowing 7 runs on 7 hits through 4 innings. A little over a month ago, he took the loss against Seattle after allowing 5 runs and 7 hits (including 2 homers) in 6 innings.
