Wednesday night, the Seattle Mariners will take the field behind Felix Hernandez as they face the Texas Rangers and Yu Darvish. Hernandez will be making his fourth start of the season as Darvish makes his third.

Felix Hernandez comes into this game after winning all three of his previous starts.  In his last start, Hernandez went 7 innings and was charged for 2 runs along with 4 hits.  He didn’t issue a single walk while striking out 11.  This season, Hernandez has an ERA of 2.11 with 30 strikeouts and just 2 walks.  If he continues the tear that he is on, he could better both his career high in strikeouts (232) and his best ERA (2.27) which were both in 2010. 

Last season, the Rangers had Hernandez’s number as he went 0 – 4 in 5 starts with a 7.57 ERA.  The Rangers put up the best numbers of any team against him in 2013 with 44 hits and 25 runs in 27.1 innings.  Texas’ Elvis Andrus has faced Hernandez the most and owns a .299 average with 20 hits and 11 RBIs in 67 at-bats.

Yu Darvish had a great start his last time out, with an 8 inning outing where he gave up just a hit and a walk while striking out 9.  A cut on his right thumb was the only reason that he didn’t get to finish the game and it could be a factor in his Wednesday night start.  Darvish has yet to give up a run this season and has struck out 15 while walking just 2.

Darvish faced the Mariners 3 times in 2013 and ended up with a 1 – 1 record and an ERA of 2.66.  Seattle’s Kyle Seager has hit Darvish well in the past.  Seager is 6 of 19 with 4 doubles and 7 RBIs against Darvish.
