Monday night the Seattle Mariners will start Roenis Elias against the Texas Rangers and Robbie Ross.  Both pitchers will be seeing their third starts of the season.

The rookie Roenis Elias is 0 – 1 this season but his numbers are decent for a pitcher seeing major league hitters for the first time.  Elias’ last start was just 5 innings and he gave up 2 runs on 4 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts. As he will have to do for the entire season, Elias will have to rely on scouting reports and help from the rest of the pitching staff and his catcher to formulate a plan of attack against the Rangers.

Robbie Ross went 5.1 innings in his 2nd start and didn’t get the decision after allowing a run on 2 hits while striking out 4 but walking 6.   No one can survive long as a starter in the majors if they are throwing 98 pitches in 5.1 innings and walking 6 batters.  But this is the first time that Ross is starting after spending his first two seasons in the bullpen and that could have something to do with his early results.

Ross faced the Mariners 8 times in 2013 with a 0 – 1 record and an ERA of 3.38.  In his career, he has seen many of the Mariners and will need to keep an eye on Jesus Montero.  Montero is 2 for 3 with 2 doubles against Ross.
