Tuesday night, Hisashi Iwakuma (11 – 6, 2.72 ERA) gets the call for the Seattle Mariners as they face A.J. Burnett (6 – 13, 4.35 ERA) and the Philadelphia Phillies. It will be the 21st start for Iwakuma and the 27th for Burnett.

Hisashi Iwakuma notched his 2nd straight victory in his last outing.  In the win, Iwakuma threw 6.2 innings of shutout ball and surrendered just 5 hits and a walk while striking out 5.  Iwakuma has allowed just 4 runs in his last 4 starts and is 6 – 3 in his last 10 outings.  Last season, Iwakuma posted a record of 14 – 6 with a 2.66 ERA in 33 starts.

Iwakuma didn’t face Philadelphia last season and he has only opposed one of the Phillies in his career.  Ben Revere is 0 for 1 with an RBI against the Japanese righty.

A.J. Burnett dropped his 4th straight game in his last start.  In that outing, Burnett gave up 4 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings of work.  He walked 4 and struck out 4. Burnett leads the league in losses and it doesn’t look like he will reverse the trend anytime soon.  He is 1 – 7 in his last 10 outings.  In 2013, Burnett started 30 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates and finished the year with a 10 – 11 record and a 3.30 ERA.

Burnett lost his only start against the Mariners last year.  Seattle is batting .227 against the veteran right-hander with 20 hits, 2 home runs and 6 RBIs in 88 at-bats.
