Wednesday afternoon, the Seattle Mariners will take the field behind Felix Hernandez as they face the Oakland Athletics and Dan Straily.  Hernandez will be making his 8th start as Straily makes his 7th.

Felix Hernandez makes this start after two straight no decisions kept his record at 3 – 1 as his ERA went up slightly to 2.53.  In his last outing, Hernandez only went 5 innings and gave up 3 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts.   Since his 3 - 0 start to open the season, “King Felix” has slowed down a bit but he is still better than most.  Last season, Hernandez was 12 – 10 with a 3.04 ERA in 31 starts.   

In 2013, Hernandez was 2 – 1 with a 1.31 ERA in 3 starts against the A’s.  In early April, he won back to back starts against the A’s including his second start where he matched a season high with 11 strikeouts.  “King Felix” will have to pitch carefully to Oakland’s Alberto Callaspo as Callaspo is batting .298 with a homer and 6 RBIs against the right-hander.

Dan Straily didn’t look good in his last start as he fell to 1 – 2 with a 5.01 ERA after a 4.2 inning effort where he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 4.1 innings.  Straily walked 3 and struck out 3 as he threw 82 pitches.  Last season, Straily was a respectable 10 – 8 with an ERA of 3.96 in 27 starts.

In 2013, Straily was 0 – 1 with an ERA of 8.64 in 2 starts against the Mariners.  He gave up 8 runs on 12 hits in 8.1 innings. Seattle’s Robinson Cano is batting .500 with an RBI when facing the right-hander.
