On Saturday afternoon, the Seattle Mariners will start Felix Hernandez against the Oakland A’s and Tommy Milone.   Hernandez will be making his second start of the season while Milone will be making his season debut. In his first start of the season, Felix Hernandez showed why he is called the “King”.  “King Felix” was strong with a 6 inning outing where he gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk.  Although he surrendered a home run, he struck out 11 and finished the day with an ERA of 3.00.   In his 10th major league season, Hernandez still looks like he has the form to be just as dominating this year as he has been in the past. 

In a decade’s time, a pitcher sees a lot of teams and a lot of hitters.  And Hernandez has seen most of the Mariners enough to know what they are capable of.   Of the Mariners, Coco Crisp has the most plate appearances against Hernandez with 58 in his career.  But to go with his 13 hits, Crisp has struck out 12 times.        

Tommy Milone starts his first game of the season looking to improve on last year’s numbers.  In 2013, Milone made 26 starts and came away with a 12 – 9 record and an ERA of 4.14.  His numbers could stand to be better considering that he gives up a lot of walks (75 in the last two seasons) and home runs (49 in the last two seasons). 

Against the Mariners, Milone has been hit hard and will need to focus on the fundamentals to get through this start.  Milone will have to watch out for Jesus Montero, who has torched him in the past.  Montero is batting .500 with 8 hits in 16 at-bats, including a home run and 4 RBIs.
