Thursday night, the Seattle Mariners and Felix Hernandez will face the New York Yankees and Hiroki Kuroda. It will be Hernandez’s 7th start and Kuroda’s 6th. 

Felix Hernandez has so far lived up to the “King Felix” nickname with his 3 – 1 record and his 2.40 ERA.  He took a no decision in his last start after pitching 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.   Last season, Hernandez went 12 – 10 with an ERA of 3.04 in 31 starts.

In 2013, Hernandez didn’t get a decision in his 2 starts against the Yankees but he was solid with a 1.38 ERA and just 2 runs and 10 hits allowed in 13 innings with 4 walks and 15 strikeouts.  New York’s Mark Teixeira has hit Hernandez well, with a .297 average, 5 homers and 9 RBIs when facing the right-hander.

Hiroki Kuroda comes into this one after losing his last start and sending his record to 2 – 2 with an ERA of 5.28.  Kuroda’s previous outing lasted just 4.2 innings after he allowed 8 runs on 10 hits (including 2 home runs) with 2 strikeouts and no walks.   Kuroda struggled last season en route to an 11 – 13 record with an ERA of 3.31 in 32 starts.       

In 2013, Kuroda lost his only start to the Mariners after giving up 4 runs on 8 hits in 6.1 innings of work.  Seattle’s Jesus Montero could be a concern for Kuroda.  Montero is 3 of 9 with a solo homer against Kuroda.
