Sunday afternoon, Brandon Maurer will get the ball for the Seattle Mariners as Kevin Slowey gets the ball for the Miami Marlins.  Both pitchers will be making their first starts of the season.

Brandon Maurer started the season with the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma but a lack of arms in the starting rotation has given him an opportunity to play in the big leagues.  This season in Tacoma, Maurer has appeared in 4 games with one start.  In 2013, he started 14 games for the Mariners and appeared in another 8 finishing with a 5 – 8 record and a 6.30 ERA.

Last season Maurer didn’t get to face the Marlins and has only faced one hitter currently with Miami.  Jarrod Saltalamacchia has one at-bat against Maurer but the result was a 2 run homer.

Kevin Slowey gets his first start after opening the season in the bullpen for the Marlins. Ineptitude and injuries have pressed Slowey into the starting rotation.  So far, Slowey has appeared in 4 games with an ERA of 4.38, 7 strikeouts and 4 walks.  In 2013, Slowey compiled a 3 – 6 record with an ERA of 4.11 in 14 starts and 6 relief appearances.

Last season, Slowey didn’t get an opportunity to face the Mariners but he has some experience against many on the Seattle roster.  Slowey will need to keep an eye on Corey Hart.  Hart is 5 of 17 with 2 home runs and 2 RBIs when facing Slowey.
