Neither Seattle nor the L.A. Angels are in a spot to take a wait and see approach anymore after having two of the largest payrolls in baseball. The Angels were a disappointment, finishing in third place with talent like Mike Trout, Josh Hamilton, and Albert Pujols and the Mariners spent $240 million this off-season to lure Robinson Cano away from New York.

For a record seventh straight year Felix Hernandez gets the ball on opening day for Seattle. It's hard to believe that King Felix is only 27-years-old after almost a decade in the league but the right-hander hasn't shown signs of wear just yet. That being said, Hernandez hasn't posted more than 14 wins in either of the last four seasons including a 12-10 record a year ago. With just a 3.07 ERA the record obviously wasn't all Hernandez' doing so the Mariners brought in some offensive firepower to return the 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner back to the podium. Hernandez went 2-1 against the Angels a year ago in 5 starts and the Angels roster has hit just .232 against King Felix in 315 total AB.

31-year-old Jered Weaver takes the bump for the Angels, looking to come back from a somewhat disappointing 11-8 record in 2013. Weaver was a 20 game winner in 2012 and finished 3rd in the AL Cy Young voting that year but last season didn't provide the career upswing that Angel fans had hoped. Weaver was 1-1 against the Mariners a year ago, getting rocked and knocked out in the 6th in one game while going 8 strong in the other. Weaver finished strong, winning four of his last five decisions but Monday night will tell if that surge carries over into 2014.
