Monday night, the Seattle Mariners will send Taijuan Walker to the mound to take on the Houston Astros and Collin McHugh.   Walker will be making his Major League debut as McHugh makes his 13th start.

Taijuan Walker gets the call up from Triple-A Tacoma to make his Major League Debut in this one.   The highly rated prospect has been solid in the Minors this season, compiling a 2 – 1 record with a 4.11 ERA in 6 starts.  If not for a shoulder injury in Spring Training, he probably would have already been on the big league roster.

In 2013, Walker made 3 starts for the Mariners and went 1- 0 with a 3.60 ERA.  Two of his starts were against the Astros and he went 1- 0 with a 1.80 ERA in those outings.

Collin McHugh took his 3rd straight loss in his last start and that lowered his record to 4 – 6 with a 2.86 ERA.  In the loss, McHugh went 7 innings and allowed 3 runs and 3 hits (including a homer) while walking 2 and striking out 9. Three runs aren’t bad but when the offense gets shutout, the starting pitcher gets the loss.  Last season, McHugh was 0 - 4 with a 10.04 ERA in 5 starts and 2 relief appearances for the Colorado Rockies and the New York Mets.

In 2013, McHugh didn’t face the Mariners but he has 2 starts against them this season.  In those 2 outings, McHugh is 1 – 1.  He got the win after 6.2 scoreless innings in the 1st start but he was lit up for 6 runs and 8 hits in 4 innings.
