San Francisco Giants right-hander Matt Cain will try to win his first game since the middle of May on Friday when he faces off against San Diego Padres starter Eric Stults, who has lost six consecutive starts.

Matt Cain had his best start in a while against the Cincinnati Reds last Saturday, but he had to settle for the no decision in a game the Reds ended up winning 7-3. Cain pitched seven scoreless innings in that start and allowed just six hits while striking out four batters and walking two. Through 13 starts, he is 1-6 with a 4.38 ERA and his strikeout rate is the lowest it has been since way back in his rookie season.

Padres outfielder Seth Smith has just three hits in 32 at-bats against Cain in his career with five strikeouts. Chris Denorfia is 5-for-13 against the right-hander with a double and a triple.

Eric Stults picked up his league-leading 11th loss of the year last Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks in San Diego. He pitched 5.1 innings in that start and gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits while walking three and striking out two. Stults now has a 2-11 record, but a lot of those losses were caused by the lack of run production from the Padres' offense.

Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is 9-for-30 against Stults with a double, three home runs and nine RBI in his career.
