Monday night, Matt Cain will take the hill for the San Francisco Giants as they take on Jeff Locke and the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Cain will make his 6th start of the season despite a minor thumb injury as Locke makes his 1st.

Matt Cain was lucky to escape without another loss in his last start after giving up 7 runs on 10 hits (including 2 home runs) in 6 innings while walking 3 and striking out 4.  Without the decision, Cain’s record stood at 0 - 3 and his ERA went up to 4.35.   Last season, Cain was 8 – 10 with a 4.00 ERA in 30 starts. 

In 2013, Cain was 1 - 0 with a 2.70 ERA in 2 starts against the Pirates.  Cain has handled the Pittsburgh lineup well in his career and they are batting just .190 against him.

Jeff Locke gets the call-up from Pittsburgh’s Triple-A affiliate to make the start Monday night.  His season in the minors hasn’t been that great so far and that could factor into his performance against the Giants.   Last year, Locke had a 10 – 7 record with an ERA of 3.52 in 30 starts with the Pirates.

In 2013, Locke didn’t get the decision in his only start against the Giants. His ERA was 6.75 after a 4 inning effort where he surrendered 3 runs on 5 hits in just 4 innings.   San Francisco’s Marco Scutaro is 1 of 2 with 2 RBIs against Locke.
