Tuesday night, Matt Cain takes the hill for the San Francisco Giants as they face Roberto Hernandez and the Philadelphia Phillies. It will be the 16 th start for Cain and the 18th start and 21st appearance for Hernandez.
Matt Cain picked up the victory in his last start and that took his record to 2 - 7 with a 4.18 ERA. In the win, Cain surrendered 2 runs on 5 hits (including a homer) in 6 innings of work as he walked 2 and struck out 4. Cain is suffering from a shoulder ailment and it might affect his results in this one. It's been a rough year for the right-hander and it would be a miracle if he came close to his numbers from 2013 when he went 8 - 10 with a 4.00 ERA in 30 starts.
Last season, Cain was 1 -0 with a 2.70 ERA in 2 starts against the Phillies. He will have to keep an eye on Philadelphia's Chase Utley as Utley is batting .333 with 4 home runs and 8 RBIs against the veteran right-hander.
Roberto Hernandez added a win in his last outing and that boosted his record to 4 - 8 with an ERA of 4.22. In that start, Hernandez allowed just a run on 3 hits in 8 innings of work. He walked 2 and struck out 3 in one of his better efforts of the season. The victory broke a three game losing streak for the righty. In 2013, Hernandez went 6 - 13 with a save and an ERA of 4.89 in 24 starts and 8 relief appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays.
Last season, Hernandez didn't get the decision in his only start against the Giants. And the Giants have hit Hernandez hard in the past. San Francisco is batting .421 with 24 hits and 3 RBIs in 57 at-bats.
