Monday night, the San Francisco Giants will give the ball to Ryan Vogelsong as they square off against the Philadelphia Phillies and Cliff Lee. It will be the 20th start for Vogelsong and the 11th for Lee.
Ryan Vogelsong dropped his 4th straight game in his last outing and that lowered his record to 5 -7 with a 3.86 ERA. In the loss, Vogelsong surrendered just 2 runs and 6 hits (including a home run) in 6.1 innings. He didn't issue any walks as he struck out 4. But his offense was shut out and he took the hard luck loss. Vogelsong hasn't won a game in nearly a month despite some solid outings. Last season, Vogelsong was just 4 - 6 with a 5.73 ERA in 19 starts.
In 2013, Vogelsong didn't face the Phillies but he has seen many of the hitters on the Philadelphia roster before. Eight Phillies have faced Vogelsong before and they are batting .233 with 10 hits, a home run and 2 RBIs in 43 at-bats.
Cliff Lee will make his first start since late May after going on the 60 Day DL with an elbow injury. Lee will bring a record of 4 -4 with a 3.18 ERA into this outing. He won that last start in May behind a 6.2 inning effort where he allowed 2 runs on 9 hits in 6.2 innings. Prior to going on the DL, Lee was having a rough season and has virtually no chance of matching his results from last season when he went 14 - 8 with a 2.87 ERA in 31 starts.
In 2013, Lee won his only start against the Giants after allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits (including a home run) in 8 innings. He might want to keep an eye on San Francisco's Hunter Pence. Pence is 6 for 11 with 2 homers and 3 RBIs when facing the veteran lefty.
