In a weird scheduling quirk Friday afternoon San Francisco's Ryan Vogelson makes his first start of 2014 while Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu takes the mound for the third time already. Vogelsong had his 2013 season disrupted after getting hit on the hand while batting against Washington's Craig Stammen which forced him to miss almost 3 months. The fractured bones and dislocated joints may have also cost the pitcher $1.5 million as the Giants rejected a $6.5 million club option only to resign the 36-year-old for 1 year, $5 million.
Vogelsong was 4-6 in 2013 but his strong return from the DL is what interested San Fran in bringing him back for 2014. Although Vogelsong posted just a 2-2 record after he came back August 9th, he was able to lower his ERA from 7.19 to 5.73 to end the year. Vogelsong made just one start against the Dodgers, a 4-3 Giant win in which the pitcher went 6 innings and allowed 3 runs but got a no-decision.
Thanks to opening the season in Sydney, Australia a week before other MLB teams and being the first game of the year on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball, Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu already has a 1-0 record on the year as he enters his third start. Ryu has pitched 12 innings this season striking out 12 and so far not allowing a single run. In fact Ryu has allowed only 5 hits all year and would be 2-0 if not for a bullpen meltdown against San Diego.
Ryu started 5 games a year ago against the Giants, going 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA. Hunter Pence (.429), Marco Scutaro (.417), and Pablo Sandoval (.308) have all experienced success against Ryu in double-digit career AB's.
