It was looking like the beginning of the end for 36-year-old Ryan Vogelsong (0-0) after the first two starts of the season. The pitcher gave up 4 runs and 7 hits in his first two games and was putting stress on the San Francisco bullpen after failing to get out of the fifth inning in either start. Vogelsong seemed to ease some Giants fans fears in his third outing, tossing 6 innings of 1-run ball as San Francisco beat the rival Dodgers 2-1. Vogelsong looks to continue the upswing when he takes on the struggling Jorge De La Rosa (0-3) and the Rockies.
Vogelsong made 19 starts a year ago after battling injuries, one against the Rockies in which he earned a no-decision despite allowing 5 runs in 5 innings in an 8-9 San Fran loss. Over his career Vogelsong has made 8 starts against Colorado, going 5-1 with a 3.22 ERA including 2-1 with a 5.18 ERA at Coors Field.
De La Rosa is trying to build on a successful 16-6 campaign in 2013 but has had some trouble getting out of the gate. Through 4 starts he's posted a 7.58 ERA, not the numbers you want in a contract year. There's signs of turning the corner though as his last outing was the best of the year, allowing just 2 runs over 6 innings in what was still a 2-4 Rockie loss. Prior to that start De La Rosa had allowed 14 runs in 13 innings his first 3 starts.
De La Rosa will have to fare slightly better than he did last season against the Giants if he wants to get in the win column as his 2013 ERA against the team was 6.16 even though his record was 1-1. Five Giants players have faced De La Rosa over 10 times led by Buster Posey (.350), Pablo Sandoval (.324), and the injured Marco Scutaro (.400).
