Thursday afternoon, the San Francisco Giants will take the field behind Madison Bumgarner as they take on the Cincinnati Reds and Mike Leake. Bumgarner will be making his 13th start as Leake makes his 12th. 

Madison Bumgarner added another win in his last start and that took his record to 7 – 3 with an ERA of 2.85.  In that outing, Bumgarner pitched 7 shutout innings and gave up just 3 hits and a walk while striking out 10.  It was the 2nd straight start that Bumgarner posted 10 strikeouts in.  He’s averaging over 10 strikeouts per 9 innings this season compared to 8.9 in 2013 when he went 13 - 9 with a 2.77 ERA in 31 starts.

Last season, Bumgarner didn’t face the Reds but he has faced some of their hitters before.  The 7 Reds that have faced Bumgarner are only batting .194 against him with 9 hits, a homer and 9 RBIs in 55 at-bats.

Mike Leake got the win in his last outing and that improved his record to 3 – 4 with a 2.92 ERA.  In that start, Leake went 6 innings and surrendered 4 runs on 6 hits with a walk and 4 strikeouts.  Last season, Leake was 14 – 7 with a 3.37 ERA in 31 starts.

In 2013, Leake won his only start against the Giants after allowing a run on 12 hits in 6 innings of work.  But Leake might want to pitch around Tyler Colvin.  Colvin is 6 for 17 with 4 homers and 8 RBIS against the right-hander.
