Friday night, Robbie Erlin will take the mound for the San Diego Padres as they face Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals.  It will be Erlin’s 4th start and Strasburg’s 6th.

Robbie Erlin comes into this one off his 2nd straight loss of the season.  Now 1 – 2 with an ERA of 4.15, Erlin gave up 4 runs on 3 hits (including a home run) in 6 innings the last time out.  He struck out 3 but also walked 3.  Erlin started 9 games and appeared in 2 more last season as he compiled a 3 - 3 record with a 4.12 ERA. 

In 2013, Erlin’s one start against the Nationals was his worst of the season.  He got the loss after allowing 9 runs on 6 hits (including 2 homers) in just 4 innings of work.  His ERA that day was an unbelievable 20.25. Erlin will need to stay away from Washington’s Bryce Harper.  Harper is 2 for 2 with an RBI against Erlin.

Stephen Strasburg isn’t starting the season as well as most would have expected.  He is 1 – 2 with a high 5.53 ERA.  His last start was solid though.  Strasburg didn’t get the decision despite going 6 innings and giving up just 2 runs on 5 hits with a walk and 9 strikeouts.  In 2013, Strasburg was just 8 – 9 with an ERA of 3.00 in 30 starts.

Last season, Strasburg won both of his starts against the Padres with an ERA of 3.21.  San Diego’s Alexi Amarista could be a concern for Strasburg.  Amarista is 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 RBIs when facing Strasburg.
