Tuesday afternoon, the San Diego Padres will give the ball to Eric Stults as they take on the Seattle Mariners and Roenis Elias.  Both pitchers will be making their 15th starts of the season.

Eric Stults dropped his 3rd straight game in his last start and that lowered his record to 2 – 8 with a 5.79 ERA.  In that outing, Stults gave up 4 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings as he walked 1 and struck out 2.  Stults hasn’t won a game in over a month and it seems unlikely that he will even come close to matching his results from 2013 when he went 11 – 13 with a 3.93 ERA in 33 starts. 

In 2013, Stults pitched to a no-decision in his only start against the Mariners after allowing just a run on 3 hits in 8 innings. In the past, Stults has held the Mariners to a .286 batting average with 8 hits, 2 homers and 3 RBIs in 28 at-bats.

Roenis Elias comes into this one with a 5 – 5 record and a 4.13 ERA after taking the loss his last time out.  In that start, Elias was torched for 6 runs on 6 hits (including a home run) in just 3.1 innings of work.  He walked 3 while striking out 4. In his rookie season, Elias is doing as well as can be expected for a pitcher just seeing Big League hitters for the first time.

Since Elias lacks any experience against the Padres, he will do the same thing that he has had to do all season – rely on the advice of the rest of the pitching staff and the information contained in the scouting report.
