Wednesday afternoon, Ian Kennedy gets the call for the San Diego Padres as they face Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants.  It will be Kennedy’s 17th start and Lincecum’s 16th.

Ian Kennedy pitched to a no-decision in his last outing and that held his record at 5 – 8 with a 3.90 ERA.  In that start, Kennedy gave up 5 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings as he walked 2 and struck out 5.  For the 2nd straight start, Kennedy needed over 100 pitches to just get through 5 innings and that isn’t a good thing.  In 2013, he averaged only 99.6 pitches per start en route to a 7 – 10 record and a 4.91 ERA in 31 starts for the Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Last season, Kennedy was 1- 1 with a 2.88 ERA in 4 starts against the Giants.  As a team, the Giants aren’t particularly hitting Kennedy well, but they are scoring runs. San Francisco is batting .238 with 54 hits, 2 homers and 21 RBIs in 227 at-bats against Kennedy.

Tim Lincecum evened his record at 5 – 5 with a 4.90 ERA after taking the loss his last time out.  In the loss, Lincecum threw 6 innings and surrendered 4 runs on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1. It was another down start in an up and down season for the veteran right-hander. And if he isn’t careful, he’ll turn in another season like 2013 when he posted a 10 – 14 record and a 4.37 ERA in 32 starts.

Last season, Lincecum was 3- 1 with a 2.22 ERA in 4 starts against San Diego.  This season he picked up his 1st win of the year against the Padres after giving up 3 runs on 7 hits (including a homer) in 6 innings of work.
