Wednesday night, the San Diego Padres will take the field behind Tyson Ross as they take on the Philadelphia Phillies and Cole Hamels. Ross will make his 14th trip to the mound as Hamels makes his 10th.
Tyson Ross saw his record fall to 6 – 5 and his ERA rise to 3.22 after taking the loss his last time out. In that start, Ross allowed 6 runs on 5 hits (including a homer) in 5.1 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 7. Ross has been up and down so far this season but he is already ahead of his results from last season when he went 3 – 8 with a 3.17 ERA in 16 starts and 19 relief appearances.
In 2013, Ross was 0 -1 with an 18.00 ERA in a start and 2 relief appearances against the Phillies. Virtually all of the Phillies have stood in the box against Ross and as a team, they are batting .364 with 8 hits and 4 RBIs in 22 at-bats.
Cole Hamels notched another on in the win column his last time out and that took his record to 2 – 3 with a 3.49 ERA. In that outing, Hamels pitched 7.2 scoreless innings and allowed just 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. It was easily his best effort in a season where he hasn’t been that great. There is still time for him to post better numbers than 2013’s when he went 8 – 14 with a 3.60 ERA in 33 starts.
Last season, Hamels pitched to a no-decision in his only outing against the Padres after allowing 5 runs on 7 hits (including a homer) in 6 innings. If there is a Padre for Hamels to watch out for, it would be Cameron Maybin. Maybin is batting .346 against Hamels with 3 doubles and a triple.
