Thursday afternoon, the San Diego Padres will give the ball to Andrew Cashner as they square off against the Philadelphia Phillies and Kyle Kendrick.  Cashner makes his 11th start as Kendrick makes his 13th. 

Andrew Cashner pitched to his 2nd straight no-decision in his last start and that kept his record at 2- 5 with a 2.13 ERA.  In that outing, Cashner pitched 6 shutout innings and gave up only 2 hits and a walk while striking out 5.  While 2 straight no-decisions don’t sound that great, they look good considering the fact that Cashner had lost 4 straight before those 2 no-decisions.  There is still time for Cashner to come close to his results from last season when he went 10 – 9 with a 3.09 ERA in 26 starts and 5 relief appearances.

In 2013, Cashner won his only start against the Phillies after allowing 2 runs on 4 hits in 7.2 innings.  He’s pitched very well against Philadelphia in the past and has held their lineup to a .156 average with just 5 hits and a home run in 32 at-bats.

Kyle Kendrick dropped another one his last time out and that lowered his record to 1 – 6 with an ERA of 4.30.  In that start, Kendrick allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (including a home run) in 7 innings of work.  He walked 5 while only striking out 2.  Kendrick seems destined to another below .500 season like 2013 when he went 10 – 13 with an ERA of 4.70 in 30 starts.

Last season, Kendrick won his only start against the Padres after pitching 8 innings and allowing 2 runs on 7 hits.  But the Padres seemed to have solved Kendrick and they are batting .311 with 14 hits, 2 homers and 4 RBIs in 45 at-bats against the right-hander.
