Tuesday night, Ian Kennedy will take the mound for the San Diego Padres as they face A.J. Burnett and the Philadelphia Phillies. Both pitchers will be making their 14th starts of the season.

Ian Kennedy picked up his 3rd straight win his last time out and that boosted his record to 5 - 6 with a 3.39 ERA.  In that start, Kennedy allowed 2 runs on 5 hits (including a home run) in 6 innings of work. He struck out 7 while issuing just 1 walk. It looks like Kennedy might have turned a corner and shaken off his poor start to the year.  Last season, he was 7 - 10 with a 4.91 ERA in 31 starts for the Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In 2013, Kennedy pitched to a no-decision in his only start against the Phillies after allowing 2 runs on 6 hits (including a home run) in 7 innings. Philadelphia’s Marlon Byrd is batting just .250 against Kennedy but he has a homer and 3 RBIs.

A.J. Burnett took the loss his last time out and that dropped his record to 3 – 5 with a 4.41 ERA.  Burnett took a beating in that start and surrendered 8 runs on 10 hits (including a home run) in 6 innings. He walked 4 and struck out 3.  The last few starts have not turned out well for Burnett and he seems to be headed for another season like 2013 when he went 10 – 11 with a 3.30 ERA in 30 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Last season, Burnett went 1 - 1 with a 1.98 ERA in 2 starts against the Padres.  Burnett might need to keep an eye on San Diego’s Carlos Quentin as Quentin is batting .375 with a homer and 7 RBIs against the veteran right-hander.
