Sunday afternoon, the San Diego Padres will take the field behind Ian Kennedy as they square off against the New York Mets and Daisuke Matsuzaka.  Kennedy will make his 15th start as Matsuzaka makes his 4th start and 20th appearance.

Ian Kennedy took the loss in his last start and that dropped his record to 5- 7 with a 3.63 ERA.  In that outing, Kennedy surrendered 5 runs on 7 hits (including a homer) in 7 innings of work.  He didn’t issue any walks as he struck out 3.  Prior to that start, Kennedy had won his last 3 outings.  If he gets back on track, she should be able to post better numbers than last season when he went 7 – 10 with a 4.91 ERA in 31 starts for the Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks. 

In 2013, Kennedy was 0 - 1 with a 5.40 ERA in 2 starts against the Mets.  David Wright could be an issue for Kennedy as Wright is batting .385 with 2 homers and 5 RBIs against the right-hander.

Daisuke Matsuzaka took his record to 3- 0 with a 2.95 ERA after winning his last start.  He went 6 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.  His night was cut short after he was hit in the right hamstring by a line drive.  But he should be just fine for this start.  In 2013, Dice-K went 3 – 3 with a 4.42 ERA in 7 starts.    

Last season, Matsuzaka didn’t face the Padres and he has only seen 3 of their hitters before.  San Diego’s Seth Smith is a perfect 4 for 4 against Dice-K with a homer and 2 RBIs.
