Wednesday afternoon, the San Diego Padres and Odrisamer Despaigne (2 – 3, 2.68 ERA) will face the Minnesota Twins and Kevin Correia (5 -13, 4.96 ERA).  Despaigne makes his 8th start as Correia makes his 23rd.

Odrisamer Despaigne took the loss after a rough start his last time out.  In defeat, Despaigne allowed 6 runs and 9 hits (including a homer) in 5.2 innings of work.  He walked a batter while striking out 3.  It was the 3rd loss in 4 starts for the rookie right-hander after he started out 2 – 0 in his first 3 outings.  But only 2 of his losses were really his fault.  He has suffered from a lack of run support in his 5 other starts but he still has kept his ERA below 3 and that is a triumph for a rookie pitcher in the Majors.

Despaigne has yet to face the Twins but if he pitches well and receives some help from his offense, he has a shot at a victory.  

Kevin Correia didn’t get the decision in his last outing despite a solid start.  He allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings of work.  He struck out 4 without issuing a walk.  Correia’s last 6 outings haven’t been that great as he has posted a 1 – 4 record in that stretch.  Last season, the veteran righty was just 9 – 13 with a 4.18 ERA in 31 starts.

In 2013, Correia didn’t face his former team but he has a start against them this season. In that outing, Correia picked up the victory after allowing 3 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings.
