Saturday night, Andrew Cashner of the San Diego Padres will take on Jose Fernandez of the Miami Marlins. Cashner will be making his 2nd start of the season after starting the Padres’ season opener.  Fernandez will also be making his 2nd start of the season after pitching the first game of the Marlins’ 2014 campaign. 

Coming into his 5th season in the big leagues, Cashner posted a 10 - 9 record last year in 26 starts with an ERA of 3.09.  His 175 innings in 2013 were the most of his career and he posted a career best in strikeouts with 128.  The Padres are hoping that Cashner can shake off his history of injuries and contribute some quality innings for them this year.

Cashner has some experience against the Marlins lineup and it has been mostly successful.  Adeiny Hechavarria has faced Cashner 5 times with 1 hit and an RBI.  The lineup as a whole is only batting .205 against the San Diego right-hander.

Jose Fernandez was sharp in the season opener and it appears that he is carrying over some of the success that he had last season.  In 2013, his first season in the majors, Fernandez started 28 games and posted a 12 – 6 record.  His ERA of 2.19 was impressive for a young pitcher and so were the 187 strikeouts.  Good things certainly appear to be in the future for Fernandez. 

Against the Padres last season, Fernandez was tough to solve their lineup.  He only surrendered 2 hits to the lineup and struck out 7.  Only Kyle Banks and Carlos Quentin were able to get those hits.
